Both Newsweek and Time featured articles on greening trends on campus recently. The Presidents Climate Commitment was noted in both articles, although not by name. The articles can be accessed at the following:

Institute for Community College Development Leadership Issues Series Held at Cornell

Debra Rowe participated in Cornell’s ICCD Leadership Issues Series—”Sustainability for Community Colleges: Curriculum, Culture, Conservation", and was the featured speaker at the event, which took place on Aug 5-8.

At the conference, participants learned about and created plans on:

  • how to include a sustainability focus in all areas of the campus – curricula, operations, purchasing, facilities, planning, etc.
  • how to use the role of higher education and their institution to help shift society to sustainability
  • how to utilize students and staff to engage in democracy and support elected representatives to change regulations to produce a sustainable future (e.g., moving from service learning to political service and engagement)

Nature’s Website Adds New Section on Climate Change

The distinguished journal Nature has covered climate issues for decades. They have now pulled it all together into a new website that is a rich source of science-based information on climate change. There is also a free monthly report, Nature Reports Climate Change, available at the same site. Full content of all articles, except recent original research articles, is available.

Also, the latest in the Nature Collections series looks at the promises and pitfalls of new energy technologies, including the potential of biofuels and nuclear power, new ways to lock away CO2, and renewables such as solar and wind power. Read the series.

Buying Green Computers Is Easy

Sam Hummel, AASHE’s IT Manager recently posted some excellent information on purchasing “green” computers. If you are in the market for new desktops or laptops, you’ll want to consider machines that consume less energy, have good take-back policies and reduce the use of toxic materials. Sam includes links to third-party verification systems that will help you make the best choice for clean and green machines. Read Sam’s posting on AASHE’s new staff blog here.

Interview with Sallie Traxler, Executive Director of ACUHO-I

This interview with Sallie Traxler is the first in a series of interviews with HEASC members. In the interview, Sallie discusses sustainability measures at ACUHO-I and in their programs and how membership in HEASC has affected this effort. Norb Dunkel, President-elect of ACUHO-I's Executive Board, tackled the final interview question on how ACUHO-I could support signatories to the ACUPCC. The interview can be found on the HEASC website homepage. To download the interview directly, click here [PDF].

The Clinton Climate Initiative Offers $100 Million in Project Financing to ACUPCC Signatories

The Clinton Climate Initiative (a Clinton Foundation program) is offering an initial allocation of $100 million of project financing exclusively available to all signatories of the ACUPCC. This program is designed to achieve reductions in energy use of 20-50% with no capital investment or net additional operating budget required, as the loans and fees are paid for by energy savings generated by the retrofits. If enough institutions are interested in the offer, the Clinton Foundation will expand the allocation exponentially to pay for all energy efficiency retrofit projects undertaken by ACUPCC signatories.

In order to finalize this arrangement, we are assessing interest among ACUPCC signatories, and whether there are projects that could be initiated within the next 12-18 months. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting initiative.

Articles from Community College Times: “First Fully Green Campus” and “Colleges Must Take Environmental Lead”

Thanks to Carolyn Teich of AACC for sending in these articles. The first is on the new Center for Health Sciences and Technology at Ohlone Community College. This is the first campus to be totally LEED certified. Read the article.

The next is an opinion piece by Darroch “Rocky” Young, Chancellor of the LA Community College District. Young discusses how he went through a gradual “metamorphosis” in adopting green building practices and why higher education needs to take the lead on the issue of climate change. Read the article.

Note that both Ohlone Community College and LA Community College District are signatories to the ACUPCC.
