Lucky attendees of the 2007 NIRSA Institutes to tour world-class facilities in and around Portland, Oregon

Corporate, community, and collegiate facilities offer something for everyone; early-bird registration ends September 24

Register now for the NIRSA National Recreation Facilities Institute, presented by Mondo (October 23-25); the NIRSA National Fitness Institute (October 24-26); and the NIRSA National Aquatic Institute (October 25-27) in Portland, Oregon. Discounts are available for those wishing to attend more than one Institute, and you can also save money by registering by the September 24 early-bird deadline.

Attendees of these Institutes will be touring world-class recreational facilities in the Pacific Northwest, including:

  • Who: Facilities, Fitness
    Aquatic: Pre-conference option
    When: Wednesday afternoon
    Nike World Campus, in Portland - NIRSA attendees will get a close-hand look at this private facility, including visits to the Lance Armstrong Facility, a 63,000 square feet structural steel building housing cycling, swimming, rock climbing, weight training, and aerobics. You’ll also visit the Bo Jackson Sports and Fitness Facility, a 50,000 square feet structure which features an indoor basketball court, three racquetball courts and one squash court, an indoor track, two fitness studios and weight rooms. The 'Bo' also includes two outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor all-purpose field, and the 400m Michael Johnson track.

    Aquatic: Pre-conference option
    When: Wednesday early afternoon
    Firstenberg Community Center, in Vancouver, Washington, is an 80,000 square feet multi-use facility that combines recreational and community spaces, and was designed with ‘green goals’ in mind.

    When: Thursday morning
    March Wellness Center is on the campus of Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland. This 400,000 square feet wellness center includes pools, a teaching kitchen, gymnasium, group fitness spaces, life design center, cardio fitness and strength training, and a day spa.

    When: Thursday midday
    Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, where a recent renovation added 60,000 square feet of new space that includes a three-court basketball gymnasium with a suspended running track, two weight rooms, two cardio-fitness rooms, several multi-purpose rooms and classrooms, a climbing center, a new outdoor center, locker rooms, the Health/Fitness Connection facilities, and a variety of food, lounge and social areas. Sustainability was key in all aspects of the design.

    NIRSA National Center in Corvallis, Oregon – a quick tour and photo opportunity is planned.
     
  • Who: Facilities
    When: Thursday afternoon
    University of Oregon Student Recreation Center is 138,000 square feet, with a final build-out to include a new aquatic center with fitness/leisure pools and spas; additional gymnasiums, cardio/weight space and racquetball courts; expanded locker rooms, rock wall and tennis center; social lounge; and relocated/renovated administration space. Substantial sustainability initiatives are incorporated in the design.

    When: Thursday afternoon
    Tualatin Hills Aquatic Facility, located at the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex, is a 50-meter pool that provides recreational and educational services for all ages, including swim lessons, water aerobics, recreational swim team, public swimming and diving. The pool is equipped with one and three meter diving boards, a dive tower with 5, 7.5 and 10 meter platforms, a rope swing, small kids slide, and a basketball hoop.

    North Clackamas Water Park includes metro Portland’s only wave pool, a dive well, three awesome water slides, a lap pool and adults-only hot tub and sand volleyball.
