Host a 2008 National Collegiate Golf Championship local qualifier

Step up to the first tee

Collegiate Golf Alliance (CGA) is accepting applications to host a local qualifying event for the 2008 National Collegiate Golf Championship (NCGC) program. Universities that wish to host an event must apply by May 26, although specific event details such as date and golf course are not required on the application.

A two-person scramble event for collegiate and university amateurs, the NCGC allows golfers to compete for their university to see who will be the national champion. The Championship has three divisions: Student, Faculty/Staff and Alumni/Community.

School and player benefits

This amateur golf event is focused on university recreational golfers and consists of 30-50 local qualifying tournaments held across the United States in spring, summer and fall. Local qualifying winners advance to the National Collegiate Golf Championship, November 7-10 in Las Vegas.

Local qualifying host schools receive a prize package valued at over $1000 and over $80 per player. For hosting an NCGC local qualifier, the school receives an Upswing driver, hybrid, putter, beverage cart sponsored by Matrix Fitness, AlmostGolf practice balls, shag tube, and two pairs of Oakley sunglasses for their Red Bull Final 5 winners. The NCGC provides all players with an Upswing wedge, ball marker hat clip, Red Bull samples, and a one-year subscription to Golf World. Host schools that have more than 50 players receive a Southwest Airlines round-trip ticket to defray travel costs to the championship.

What tournament directors are saying about the NCGC

  • (On the Red Bull Final 5) “Probably the best single component of our local qualifier.”
Sean Del Rossi, Cal Poly Pomona
  • “I was shocked at the quantity and quality of the awards being given out. Very expensive golf clubs and gear was awarded and raffled; I believe everyone left with far more than the cost of their play.”
Mark Hikin, University of California, Berkeley
  • “This was definitely the best prize package we have offered for any intramural program ever, and the students were amazed that they would get to compete in such a high profile event.”
    Steven Verba, Rutgers

What students are saying about the NCGC

  • “Thank you so much for the experience. You guys put a lot into this event and it’s truly a worthwhile and fun experience. I hope that we'll be back again and next time to not choke away the championship.”
    Eric Covert, University of Miami
  • ”The experience and memories were priceless.”
    Doug Richley, Central Michigan University
  • “I got to know a lot of people, see some great golf and play on a great golf course. Competition among people and schools is always so much fun. I expected more people to get caught up in the competition and I was pleasantly surprised that even though they took the game seriously, having fun was just as important.”
Kyle Rose, University of Rhode Island
  • “I flew to Las Vegas wondering if the event was real, or one of those ‘sounds too good to be true’ experiences. The event surpassed my expectations.”
Peter St Pierre, Western Kentucky University
  • “As a competitive golfer in high school, I thought my time to compete in high-level golf tournaments was over when I enrolled at Marquette University. But upon arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada, to play in the National Collegiate Golf Tournament, I realized that absolutely was not true. From the beginning, my partner and I were treated like real competitors.”
    John Borneman, Marquette University
  • “Being given the opportunity to play with people from across the nation allowed my partner and me to meet and share our passion for golf with many.”
    Andy Verchota, Marquette University

This year's sponsors include: Southwest Airlines, Red Bull, Fox Sports West, Matrix Fitness, American Golf, Upswing Golf, AlmostGolf, Golf World and Oakley. To provide additional resources, CGA has appointed six regional managers to assist in the programming of campus golf events and help coordinate the national tournament.
