Thanks to the institutions that celebrated 2008 National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day on February 22.

February 22, 1950, is NIRSA's founding date, and in 1999, members voted to proclaim this a day for nationwide focus on the positive benefits of recreational sports, fitness and wellness.

Many colleges and universities sent NIRSA descriptions and photos of their activities, chronicling their day (or week) of celebration. You can view the photos and activities on the NIRSA website. If you forgot to send in your photos, it’s not too late. Just email them to Mary Callender and they will be added to the website.

Some of the unique celebratory events included:

  • Drop-In Dodgeball
  • Backyard Boogie Event
  • Cooking Demonstrations
  • Day of Wellness, which included activities of “Do you have the best on-campus job” contest in promotion of occupational wellness, and environmental education activities
  • IronMan contest
  • Massages

Start planning now for next year’s celebration. The February 22 date never changes!
