A Night at the Museum

With less than 70 days until the start of the 2008 Annual Conference & Recreational Sports Exposition, the Host Committee is finalizing details and preparing for your arrival! Throughout the past months, we have highlighted many of the events and opportunities in Austin. This month we feature another social event, A Night at the Museum.

Scheduled for Thursday night from 7:30-10 p.m., this social will be held at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Attendees will have access to the museum and exclusive use of the IMAX Theater with showings of "Dolphins and Whales" and "Grand Canyon Adventures - 3D." Details on the movie times will be provided in your conference program. Transportation and refreshments will be provided.

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in downtown Austin tells the "Story of Texas" with three floors of interactive exhibits and Austin's only IMAX Theater. A 35-foot-tall bronze Lone Star sculpture greets visitors in front of the Museum, and a colorful terrazzo floor in the Museum's rotunda features a campfire scene with enduring themes from Texas's past.

This month's recipe is from a legendary Austin restaurant, Threadgill's. It is a simple fact that the Threadgill's restaurants, museum and live music venues have more to do with Austin's cultural and musical heritage than most any other institution within the city limits.

Garlic Cheese Grits

6 cups cold water
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
1 ½ cups hominy grits
1 tablespoon yellow onion, minced
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
8 ounces Velveeta, cubed
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350°. Bring water to a boil. Add grits and return to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add all other ingredients, and put into oiled casserole pan. Bake, covered, for about 45 minutes, stirring midway. Makes 10 big servings.
