$3.1 billion in NIRSA Member recreational facility construction

Results from the 2006-2011 NIRSA Facility Construction Report

One of our highest priorities at the NIRSA National Center is quality research and data collection, which helps us understand the profession as a whole and the progress we are collectively making. Recently, the National Center administered the NIRSA Facility Construction Survey, and 220 Member Institutions reported construction projects—either in progress or on the horizon. Recreation facilities are so important to us because they house the quality programs, services, and activities that benefit millions of college students. From our most recent data collection efforts on facilities, the news for the next five years is fantastic: NIRSA Member Institutions are in the process of constructing $3.1 billion in capital projects for quality recreation facilities.

The Executive Summary highlights essential details about facility construction trends from a national perspective. The summary is designed as a one-page “pass along” that can easily be shared with senior administrators to highlight the astounding progress that NIRSA Member Institutions are making in the provision of quality recreation facilities. Also, we’re pleased to offer the complete data exclusively to NIRSA Members on our website.

When it’s time to make the case for construction, this report becomes a very valuable tool. Other NIRSA research will help inform your case, such as The Value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education. Another crucial tool is the annual National Recreation Facilities Institute, which is essential for those in all stages of the process, from dreaming of a new facility to managing existing ones.

Thanks to all members who completed the NIRSA Facility Construction Survey. Your continued participation and diligence helps us collect data to greatly benefit the profession.
