The University of Texas-Pan American (men's), Sam Houston State University (women's) and the University of West Florida (co-rec) snagged national titles in the first NIRSA National Flag Football Championships. Hosted by The University of Texas at Dallas January 4-7, a total of 53 teams from 18 different states and Washington, D.C. competed in the National Campus Championship Series event.

Led by tournament Most Valuable Player Ricardo Salinas, the University of Texas-Pan America defeated tournament favorite University of North Carolina-Charlotte 27-20. Salinas was joined by his brother Reynaldo Salinas and teammates Juan Aladape and Joacob Santa Maria on the all-tournament team. In the women’s division, Sam Houston State University beat rival University of West Florida 25-6. SHSU won every game at the tournament and placed four players on the all-tournament team: Tabitha Brown, Jessica Hatch, Annie Miller and tournament MVP April Ward. In the co-rec division, University of West Florida squared off with University of Nebraska, who had beaten UWF in a pool play game 12-9. However, UWF prevailed in the rematch, winning 31-25 in an up-and-down contest. Representing UWF on the all-tournament team was Shane Conti, Corey Gerdeman, Michael Methvin, and co-MVP Katherine Matheny.

The teams and staff battled wet and windy conditions early in the tournament before sunshine made its appearance for the Championship games. The tournament was played on 11 fields at the University of Texas at Dallas. UTD Recreational Sports Director Tricia Losavio served as Tournament Director and was assisted by a dedicated pool of students and professionals. The tournament staff included 46 student officials representing 30 institutions, 33 tournament staff representing 23 institutions, and 5 NIRSA representatives, including NSC National Campus Championship Series Committee Chair Dan Hazlett.

“On behalf of the NIRSA National Campus Championship Series Committee, I’d like to congratulate all the teams and players who joined us in Dallas for the inaugural NIRSA National Flag Football Championships,” said Hazlett. “The entire weekend was full of high energy and even higher commitment from the players, fans, and staff, all the way through to the final play in the final game. The NCCS would especially like to applaud Tricia Losavio, the entire University of Texas at Dallas Recreational Sports staff, the NIRSA National Office, the officials, and the plethora of NIRSA Members who traveled to the Championships. It is certainly a credit to our profession to see so many talented NIRSA Members volunteer their time and expertise to ensure a successful championship. The NCCS Committee would also like to acknowledge and thank both the NIRSA and the NIRSA Services Corporation Boards of Directors for their continued support of all NCCS events. The commitment and success in Dallas is directly correlated with the commitment from both boards, and we look forward to many more successful championship events under the NCCS umbrella.”
