2006 SoCal Scramble a huge success

Annual golf benefit increases student scholarships, adds Regional Student Travel Fund

The 13th annual SoCal Scramble Golf Tournament was held on June 22, 2006 at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton, California. This year’s tournament was deemed one of the most successful, raising over $6,000. This brings the total amount raised by the SoCal Scramble to over $35,000.

Funds will continue to support the NIRSA Foundation’s SoCal Scramble Region VI Scholarship Fund and other Region VI activities, including the Region VI Student Lead On and state workshops. This year the SoCal Scramble announced the first of three student scholarships for the Region VI Conference, awarded to Staci Deluca from Sonoma State University. The SoCal Scramble Committee also announced the establishment of a $750 Regional Student Travel Fund.

The popularity of this event, as well as the support for student funding, has established the SoCal Scramble as a symbol of success in recreational sports. The field included many professionals and students from California-area colleges and universities as well as a team from Arizona State University. Golf clubs from UCLA, USC, University of California, San Diego and California State University, Fullerton were also represented. The tournament utilized a four-person scramble format and included pre-tournament putting, chipping and long drive contests. The Gross Champions of Kevin Bainton, Terry Bainton, Rick Rice and Chris Rice shot a 17 under 53. The Net Champions Albert Holguin, David J. Montellano, Nick Papanickolas and Frank Sambrano shot a net 52. The longest drive award went to NIRSA Past President Tammy Garstka and family for making the drive over from Arizona State. Northern California was also represented by John Campbell from University of California, Davis and NorCal State Director Ken Morton. View the results of the tournament.

A large factor in the success of the tournament was the tremendous support from the following sponsors: Frontier Pro Shop, Collegiate Golf Alliance, Advantage Fitness Products, Winzler & Kelly, Lundstrom & Associates, Simovich & Sons Construction, A to Z Glass & Mirror, Sterling Design and the Julie and Cindy Talk Show. Participating tee sponsors included University of California, Berkeley, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, UCSD, UCLA, USC, Oregon State University, Loyola Marymount University, University of California, Irvine and Sonoma State. All participants and sponsors are to be commended for participating in an event that will further the growth and quality of recreational programs and student development. I would also like to thank the volunteers that provided the foundation for a successful event: California State University, Northridge, Pepperdine, UCSD, Cal Poly Pomona, Sonoma State, Long Beach City College, UCLA, and USC. And a special thanks to Jen de-Vries, NIRSA Region VI Vice President, for attending and volunteering.
