University of Arizona’s recreation center celebrates 15 years

Wildcats go all-out to honor and promote recreation

The University of Arizona community seeks prizes and information at the SRC's open house.

The Student Recreation Center (SRC) at the University of Arizona celebrated in style for its 15th anniversary this past fall, with an awards reception and open house. "It was our way of showing patrons, especially students, our appreciation for their support of the facilities and programs offered through Campus Recreation," said Juliette Moore, CRSS, director of Campus Recreation.

The awards reception honored several key people who have contributed greatly to the SRC since its inception. Attendees enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, live music, and a Commemorative Table display of articles, pictures and memorabilia.

The following day's open house, dubbed "Celebration of Life," gave the university community a chance to enjoy all that the SRC has to offer. Approximately 500 people enjoyed free food, prizes, big-gloved boxing, a climbing wall, and Campus Recreation's in-house DJ spinning records. The free massages, acupuncture, and other alternative health services provided by the Tucson business community were a big hit. Student demonstrations of aikido and capoeira, the Brazilian mix of martial arts, song, and dance, captivated the audience.

Fifteen years is just the beginning for the SRC. "Student visitation to the SRC has increased by 39% from 1998 through 2004," Moore said. In order to accommodate the growing needs of the university community, the Department of Campus Recreation recently passed a referendum to expand the SRC.

Maria Mencias, an SRC student employee, said, "Students definitely take advantage of the fitness classes, equipment and other programs offered at the SRC to help them deal with the stress of college life." At the University of Arizona, as at so many colleges and universities, the recreation center is an important outlet for students looking to stay fit and have some fun while keeping up with their schoolwork.

Congratulations to the University of Arizona for their commitment to recreation and the success of its center and programs!
